Open science education project, launched in 2013 by Ivar Maksutov. Our mission is to promote scientific thinking. We engage leading academics in creating educational content and distributing it across different social platforms and media sources.
We have already collaborated with more than 370 researchers from MIT, Harvard, Cambridge, LSE, UCL, King’s College and other academic institutions. Among them are 8 Nobel Prize laureates, such as Harold Walter Kroto, Roy J. Glauber, Richard Henderson and Didier Queloz.
We are a team of creatives passionate about knowledge, and, as well as our experts, we live in different corners of the world: from Yerevan to London.

Grand Questions of Moral Philosophy — Serious Science
Why study moral philosophy? How human altruism can be explained? Do we have free will? Where does the willingness to sacrifice oneself for others come from, and is it right to sacrifice one person to save five? Does virtue contradict economic prosperity? Can absolute equality be just?
Serious Science experts from leading universities worldwide answer these and other questions. This course offers a range of scientific perspectives on classical philosophical problems in ethics. It is comprised of 8 lectures filmed from 2014 to 2020. If you have any questions or comments on the content of this course, please write to us at hello@serious-science.org.

Exploring the Brain: from Synapses to Cognition
Переглядів 1,8 тис.7 місяців тому
The human brain is a remarkably complex organ, consisting of billions of interconnected neurons. It can be divided into distinct regions, each with specific functions, such as memory and decision-making. Cognition, which includes processes like perception, memory, language, and problem-solving, is all orchestrated by the brain. It's through these cognitive processes that we perceive and interac...

I found Prof. Neil Burgess explanation of the difficult topic absolutely brilliant. After many years as a neuro-physio, had to understand why our stroke people have such a challenge walking and have poor visual-spatial awareness. I wish I could contact Neil to give a talk to us as neuro physio in October in london Farshideh
On the nature versus nurture questions. A certain political ism is improper. It claims that all differences in economic outcomes are entirely due to baseless bigotry, which is nonsense. If ways of thinking or behaving are nature originating from genetics, then it matters a lot if a devolved, dysgenic, backward, foolish, gullible, and naive person has children with a polymath genius doctorate in 30 areas of specialty so that the offspring's average mental acuity shall fall between that of the biological parents. Almost all scientists who are not biased by the political ism say that genes are who we are so that clones of us shall think and behave in similar ways. If you clone someone extremely NOT smart, then the clone shall also be the same. A person's ability to command a huge salary stems from their ability to do important things that others are much less able to do will not be available with everyday common folk, or people who are even less clued in to how the world really works. Thus, the political ism's claims that baseless bigotry is at the root of how various helpless people are economically challenged by bigotry of others who live thousand of miles away on the other side of the globe is utter nonsense that should be severely punished for reverse bigotry against whom these claims have been blamed. There used to be a twitter hashtag that called for the ending of the lives of all people so blamed for having these bigoted views prior to even being born. This would eradicate entirely the people who invented and engineered most of the technology we now use and enjoy. What kind of monsters wanted all this calamity be measured out? It came from those who claim falsely to be the victims of baseless bigotry from pre-historic times not based upon the ways that they behaved, but based upon their religion and group identity. Ring any bells? I heard in the 1990s that Jamie Dimon got a huge salary plus a very big bonus. The sum was in the many millions of dollars yearly. I computed what his hourly wage would be, and it was about $11.5 thousand per hour. To him, almost everyone on the planet excepting the bank owners themselves were economically challenged compared to him. grades are a horrible measure of school achievement!
You can’t separate “reaction” with any action. Your desire for pizza is partly a result of your body’s reaction to hunger. Your minds reaction to memory of pizza. and a billion other unconscious reactive processes. also, there is no “chooser”.
Indeed.....useful and beautiful presentation
If there's no free will, how can a practical implication of any kind exist? After all, all actors, including those who are supposed to change their behavior lack free will.
Over the last 50 years red meat consumption of down 40% and obesity is up 300% to figure 🤔
Don’t listen to this guy
That's a easy question to answer and it's simply put someone's imagination and the experts in cosmology love the theory of Dark matter and Dark energy they are determined to convince everyone that they exist despite the mounting evidence that proves that Dark matter and Dark energy doesn't exist!!!
I find his analysis very liberal - or rather anarchist I guess - especially in his characterization of the Soviet Union as just some kind of top-down Mordor-like state and Lenin as just a manipulative dictator. I totally disagree with that image. The Bolsheviks would never have been able to win the civil war against the White Army, militarily backed by every foreign capitalist imperialist state, without strong popular support; claiming anything else is ridiculous.
How does the physical radio, give rise to wonderful music, and interesting conversations, and programs. Well, the programs is in the Consciousness, stored in Memory, fourt Deep-Sleep, after falling at sleep.

Dr. Shawn Baker has entered the chat...
All of these studies are complete BS. The theory that red meat and saturated fat cause heart disease is categorically false, it is short-chain carbohydrates (foods made from sugar and flour) that do this. If this were true, then how is the carnivore diet helping so many people improve their health dramatically? This guy is a complete moron or he's shilling for the sugar/pharma industries.
So this is interesting ... the example he uses @9:41 .. "you cant just walk across somebodys yard, its fair use" .. well actually in the UK you can. The UK "rights of way" laws are a very interesting counter to the arguments in this and IMO undermines at least part of this argument when viewed from that perspective. The old world sees land differently and the idea of "property" _is_ diluted compared to the US/New World perspective.
I would stop the trolley if I can. Do the 5 people have common sense? Or are they just committing suicide?
Thank you excellent
The racists were right all along.

I think of consciousness as the top level of a hierarchy of processes in the working brain that translate brain states to consciousness. At the highest level we have consciousness and at the lowest level we have brain states. There is a lot going on the middle and at each level. We don't have an understanding precisely of what is going on to map brain states to subjective experiences and consciousness, but this does not mean that it does not happen. Clearly this mapping of brain states to mind was an evolutionary adaption. Maybe we will gain an understanding of what is happening in this mapping of brains states to consciousness in more detail one day. We can appreciate that it does happen and what is happening as an overview, but the precise mechanism may be always too difficult to follow precisely and in detail. I think we can say that it is holistic that is there are many parts of the brain that need to cooperate to create the subjective experience and to create the experience of consciousness. One more thing I wanted to add: the language of describing brain states will be completely different to that of describing subjective experiences. This is obvious.
What an incredible video, underrated fr
Thank you! Please share it with your friends and sciensters)
I’d be more impressed if Chalmers could say what the problem is. He switches between “how” and “why” as though they’re the same question. “Why” seems easy to me: evolutionary advantage. The same as for all attributes of life. What other “why” Do we need? That leaves “how”, which is a scientific problem. Philosophy might give us ideas of where to look, but mostly it provides pablum like panpsychism.
It doesn't
excellent curated collection, thanks video description's missing the final Kleppner lecture and a link to the standalone video, at 1:26:45
this is a great video
Gasses expand in a vacuum, they expand faster if you add heat, and faster still if you add momentum. Hydrogen gas has insanely insignificant amount of gravity so you have to explain how the gasses clumps together before you can get it to overcome Boyles law. The point being no one knows, it's a nice story but it's built on a bunch of conjecture and assumptions.
So, crime isn't the persons fault, it's just their genes? Morality is pointless?
So many thousands of genes account for my long thick penis. Interesting 🤔
It is completely true!
somtimes i wish i was very athletic, strong and smart like extremly good in all the sectors i mentioned but guess not haha
